TU23 Multiple Uses for a Simple SQL Procedure     Contributed

Abstract: SAS users, who manage and analyse several secondary data sets from multiple sources, must prepare their data in order to provide standard, production set that are suitable for pulling extracts and performing various analyses. A simple SQL procedure can be very effective as a tool for handling various data management steps. The CREATE TABLE and INSERT INTO... SELECT steps within the SQL procedure can be used to change the order of variables in a data set, to insert rows from multiple queries into one table a nd to add formats, labels and change the names of variables in a data set. SAS users of all skill levels in a variety of disciplines can use these steps to manipulate data sets. These steps are not specific to any one SAS version or operating system. The e xamples provided within this paper pertain to health care claims data, but can be applied to other types of data as well.

Rebecca G. Larsen is a Research Assistant for the Policy & Services Research Data Center in the Department of Mental Health Law & Policy, Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute, University of South Florida. She has a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of South Florida. She is currently invloved in studies of Medicaid and Medicare service utilization in Florida.
